There are many other factors that have a greater impact on levels of peacefulness other than religion, according to the latest research from the Institute for Economics and Peace. The report, Five Key Questions Answered on the Link between Peace and Religion, provides a comprehensive analysis of the relationship between peace and religion.
There is no one factor which drives peace or conflict. In any circumstance, there are a multitude of variables at play, and attributing responsibility to any one component would be overly simplistic. As such, religion cannot be considered the only factor driving peace or conflict.
A statistical analysis in the ‘Peace and Religion’ report shows that other characteristics have a greater influence on national levels of peace than religious traits. Issues like corruption, inequality and political terror have a much greater impact on peacefulness than religion.
There are two religious characteristics associated with peace. Firstly, countries with no restrictions on religious freedom are generally more peaceful. Secondly, the presence of multiple religions in a country also appears to have a pacifying effect if these religions are free of restrictions.
